FAQ

How long does it take to finish a piece of furniture?

It depends on which wood you choose, how complicated your design is and what amount of finishing you apply. Hardwoods are more difficult to maintain than softwoods. Hardwoods are also more expensive than softwoods. But they last longer, and resist moisture better. It takes between one and three months to finish a piece.

Can this be a way to make money?

Yes! In fact, most woodworkers already have it. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for woodworkers was $34,000 in May 2012. That's higher than the national average of $31,000 per year.

How do I get started with woodworking?

It is best to actually build furniture to learn how to make it. While you will need tools and make mistakes, you will eventually master the art of building furniture.

You should first choose the project you wish to complete. It can be something as simple and small as a box, or large-scale as an entertainment center. After you have decided on a project to work on, contact a local woodworker that specializes in this type of work. Ask the local woodworker for help in deciding what tools and where to get them. You might even ask whether there's someone else you can talk to who does this kind of work.

Where to Buy Hardwood Lumber?

You can buy hardwood lumber at Home Depot. They sell all kinds of wood products, including flooring, cabinets, furniture, etc.

There is also a wide selection of engineered hardwoods, including Ipe (Araucaria Angustifolia), Brazilian Cherry(Pau d'Arco), Mahogany (Swietenia Mcrophylla).

You can search Google for hardwood lumber to find them online.

What furniture can I refinish?

Yes! You don't have to hire a professional to refinish furniture. There are many ways you can do it yourself. Here are some ideas:

Sandpaper can be used to remove stains and scratches. Next, wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth.

Apply clear polyurethane varnish. Allow furniture to dry completely before you move it around.

Paint furniture with acrylic paint.

Use stain instead of paint. The furniture will get a rich look with the stain.

Shellac wax can be applied. You can protect your wood with wax and give it shine.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. We will use the pocket hole joint, which is drilling holes in the wood to join them. If your wood is straight and flat, this method will work well. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. Use a jigsaw or handheld drilling machine to drill 3/8 inch deep holes at the ends of each wood piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue to both sides of the wood. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
