Router Tips & Tricks

how to edge glue boards

When you use a router, it is vital to set up your table properly. These are some tips to help you set up your router table properly. This article will help you adjust the distance between your bits to avoid overheating. We will also cover how to make router spacers. And finally, you'll learn about hot gluing and how it can help you remove workpieces without damaging them.

How to set up a router table

You must ensure that the fence is at the right distance from your router table before you begin using it. Most router tables come with a liftplate to make it easier to adjust the bit height. The lift plate must be in flush alignment with the table's surface. To ensure the alignment, you can use a straight edge. Adjusting the lift's height may require you to either remove it or adjust the distance from the table.

How to adjust cut distance

You might have wondered how to adjust cutting distance when using your router. This basically involves changing the cutting distance by moving the router base adjustment to adjust the depth of your blade. Depending on the material you are cutting, one pass may be enough to create a decorative edge. However, it may take several passes to cut thicker materials. The depth of the cut depends on the sharpness of the router bit, the power of the router, and your own personal comfort. It is a good idea to make a small test cut before you decide on the setting.

How to stop router bits overheating

Modern routers have variable speed motors. Larger bits will have a faster rim speed than smaller ones. A large panel raising bit can heat up quickly when it is run at high RPMs. On the other hand, a straight bit with a 1/4" diameter will need to run at higher RPMs in order to cut smoothly. To prevent overheating, set the feed rate to the appropriate speed for the type of wood you're working with.

How to make router spacing

One reader had a question about how to make router spacers. Mike Pekovich recommends using spacers at your router table to prevent climb cuts. Climb cut are due to incorrectly feeding work from the left to the right. After a router pass, add a spacer. This will allow the spinning bit to go deeper under your fence and prevent dangerous climb cut. You can use 1/8" or 3/16" plywood to make spacers.

How to fix a router that is on a shelf edge in order to flush-trim solidwood edges

Be careful not to remove any edge banding from your shelves and cabinets when you are edging them. You can slide the trimmer in the same direction as the grain to make your cut, but any direction that cuts in any direction will damage the edge. For a smoother edge, a flush-trim router bits is a better choice. For this purpose, a flush trim router bit is great. To hold it on an edges edge, you'll need a panel.

How to create a router pattern

Before you create a router template, you will need to know how to offset the cutter bit. The offset refers the distance between the cutting edges of your router bits and the guide Bushing. Add the bit diameter to the guide bushing, and divide it by 2. The following chart displays the offsets for common combination of router-bit and guide bit diameters. You should note that not all offsets will work if the router bit you have is too large.

Are there any other things I should know regarding woodworking?

It's easy to underestimate the amount of work involved in making furniture. Finding the right wood for the project is the hardest part. There are so many options for wood, it can be difficult choosing the right one.

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will help you join two pieces of wooden together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This works well if the wood is straight and smooth. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. First, measure the area where you wish to place the pocket joint. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue Together. Apply glue to the sides of both wood. Allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes before you attach the pieces.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried properly, clamp the pieces together to make sure they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries, trim any excess wood around your joint.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
